Fashion Mall Shooting Incident in Murray, UT

A summery of my take on the Fashion Place Mall shooting incident and what should a trained concealed carrier do if one were near or around where a similar incident.
I prefer to wait 24 to 48 hours before saying anything and making any comments after a larger scale shooting incident. This morning, more information is out, which agrees with my theory based on the initial information I received from one of my local news outlet, KSL LIVE: Continuing coverage on the shooting at Fashion Place Mall in Murray on Sunday afternoon.

KSL news article on the afternoon of the shooting Police hunting for 3 suspects after shooting sparks ‘panic’ at Fashion Place mall in Utah

Sunday around 3:30 pm local time, I was having brunch at a restaurant in South Jordan which is about 15-20 minutes drive from where I was at to the mall. While eating, I saw my local news feeds live stream on FB that a “shooting” at the Fashion Place Mall in Murray. It resulted in two people being injured. Wow it’s a shooting, the media make it look big, like always. Then an hour later, I saw the video along with photos of people being escorted in a line with their hands up (typical escorted evacuate setup we seen in many school and other shootings that occurred indoors)  out of the mall. Local LEO and SWAT members were all around with their AR-15 carbines. Local media reported that there were three suspects (shooters?) that fled the area and are at “large.” Continue reading “Fashion Mall Shooting Incident in Murray, UT” »

10mm is the all-around Outdoorsman’s Caliber of Choice

The 10mm is gaining popularity, especially for those who are avid outdoorsmen.

A brief history

Dating back to the 1986 FBI Miami shootout which resulted in the creation of this cartridge. The 10mm never gain popularity and accepted by law enforcement agencies around the country. This was due to the excessive recoil which many to-be, and in the field LEO who scored poorly. Thus the stripped down 10mm, anemic 10mm or weak 10mm also known as the 40 S&W was born. Full power 10mm sits between between the .357 magnum and .44 magnum.

Current era

Modern 9mm such as the Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot has taken the FBI and many law enforcement agencies across the country by storm. With wounding ballistics equating to the 40S&W. Subsequently, in the past couple of years the FBI decided to switch to the 9mm .

For your urban EDC concealed carry, the common chambered 9mm handguns are perfectly suitable and preferred for stopping the two legged beast. The 9mm is my EDC choice of caliber for urban carry.

Top view. Shot through watermelon and a wet newspaper pack. By no means this test was to simulate bullets through any human or animal tissue/bone.

Why Your Hybrid Holster is Dangerous

What could possible go wrong with my hybrid holster? More hybrid holster hate and why…

Wearing such holster al day is comfortable on the waist. Until a mishap 😳 occurs due to;

1) The sweat shield starts to snag after wear.

2) Upon resholster, the trigger guard collapses. Most people will have to use their second hand to assist in reholster. Some folks even to point the muzzle towards their waste to snake it in. Seen this in one of the classes I attended. All of this struggle and you’re playing with your safety! 😥

3) Makes it cumbersome to reholster countless times during an 8 hour defensive concealed carry class, at the same time it increases the risk by tenfold. Many known instructors will strongly advise against such holster in their classes beside the infamous Black Hawk Serpa.

Video – What can we learn from would-to-be carjacker or robber?

Omg!

Posted by Samahan ng mga Pinoy Bloggers on Monday, December 4, 2017

Is your head tuck in your ass on that phone, and your situation awareness is non existent?

Are your vehicle windows all the way up?

How do you carry your gun?
Vehicle mounted?  SMH 😥
Hip carry? 😕
AIWB (appendix) carry 🙂

Can you effectively and quickly draw your gun while sitting in the car?

Did you take any vehicle carry courses and practice from time to time?

Maybe it wasn’t a safe neighborhood so you should not be hanging out in your car. It’s usually not a good idea to draw your gun on a drawn gun. While sitting in your car, your car door helps conceal your draw from the bad guy outside, and some tint can assist in obscuring you as a whole. Find that opportunity and moment when the bad guy is distracted and his eyes are not on your hands where you will draw, be quick! Constant practice will help during stressful situation, allowing your defensive motor skills to be second nature.
Good news is one less bad buy on the street and another gun save lives incident. The driver did well and lived. Lessons can be learned from this defensive shooting incident.

Being Firm and Short

Bum: Hey man, ya got some change?
Me: NO! “Keep on walking”
Bum: walks away.

Bum: You got a dolla to spare bro?
Me: NO! “Keep walking”
Bum: Mumbles and looks the other way.

The method of being firm and speaking from your stomach is what’s recommended by known experience defensive instructors and those who have put such action to the test. Based on the response of the panhandlers, not just ignoring but stating the No! is effective for most cases.  This is a good way to work out your peripheral vision.

  1. It firmly shows them where you stand
  2. This will make aware of other folks within your proximity and naturally forces them to look and see what’s sup
  3. If this was a disguised would be attacker or robber, hey or they might think twice since now you both just created attention

You don’t need to say much, or get nasty, be short and firm. The power of a firmness tone goes a long way. I always have a pepper spray in my hand or pocket ready to deploy if the color condition intensifies. Keep in mind that the  force you use should be proportional and your gun might not always be the solution to the problem.

Tourniquets Save Lives

Some content in this article might not be for the faint for heart, but required to understand if you want to save your life or lives of others.
It’s time that I write about one very important life saving device known as a tourniquet.
A tourniquet in your center console of your car,  or better, on your persons can increase your chance of survival in a vehicle crash that caused major arteries in one of your limbs to rapture. Consider this life saving advice. I can’t emphasize enough on this particular essential hardware. You should learn how to use one and practice how to deploy one from time to time.

I prefer the CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) above all others mainly due to it’s reliability, ease of use and proven track record.

Let’s explore the history of the CAT Tourniquet from North America Rescue Products (NARP) website:

Gruesome Ax Attack – Complying Doesn’t Always Work

An update on this gruesome attack that took place in Commifornia.
The victim offer to pay the attacker with what he had but in return, the victim received server blows with an ax.

I’ve mention before that complying doesn’t always work. This is based on multiple cases throughout the country in the past 5 years I’ve came across. You should never have the attacker decide your fate. Your life is 1000 times more precious than these low life thugs and no other human, scumbag has the right to end your life. Green Ops – Defensive Carbine I AAR

This is my second review for Green Ops. It’s also my second class I attended with them. This after action feedback and review will be about the rifle class taught by the team. Being mainly a pistol person for four and a half years, I’m starting to venture on to learning how to use a rifle correctly, effectively and efficiently. In particular the AR platform. Most all civilians in the United States who carry a firearm daily for self protection carry a pistol. It’s imperative that we spend more time and money to train and practice on the tool we carry daily. On the other hand, many of us also own the most popular rifle in American known as the AR-15. AR doesn’t stand for Assault Rifle, it stands for ArmaLite after the company that developed it in the 1950s. The AR-15 rifle platform is very versatile, you can use it for hunting, target shooting or self defense. Whether you already own one or plan on acquiring one, you should know how to effectively and safely use this rifle. You probably don’t use it or carry it everyday with you but it’s good to know how-to when needed. For this class, students are not limited to just bringing an AR-15, there was one student who brought a Tavor 🙄 😀 . Your Everyday Carry Trauma Medkit

There is no reason not to carry a basic trauma medkit as part of your EDC gear. It’s not just for gun shot wounds. What if someone stabs your upper arm for trying to steal your purse?  Let’s say you gotten into a car accident and somehow severed an artery, you have about 2-3 minutes before you bleed out and die. The ambulance is six minutes away which by then you would passed and die. Having a tourniquet handy and knowing how to quickly use it by closing that time gap is key to your survival. If you are able to stop the bleeding before the paramedics arrive you’re good to go. Unfortunately we can’t put tourniquet on our necks. Once at the hospital they’ll take it from there. I don’t rely on paramedics having a tourniquet, know how to quickly use it and reaching to me in time.

See what femoral artery bleedout looks like and notice it doesn’t take that long. *GRAPHIC* Continue reading “Your Everyday Carry Trauma Medkit” »
